I’ve been hearing from Vermonters who are concerned about mail-in voting and voter privacy amidst the recent actions from the federal government, and I want to be clear about where Vermont stands:
- We will protect voter information and will not comply with any unlawful demand for personal voter data.
- Vermont will proceed with mailing a ballot to all active, registered voters by the October 1 deadline, as directed by state law. We’ll start mailing ballots in the last week of September.
- Vermont has joined a multistate lawsuit, renewing its challenge to the illegal and unconstitutional United States Postal Service rule, which continues to be held up in court. Attorney General Charity Clark and I recently issued a joint statement over the unlawful attempt to interfere with states’ Vote-by-Mail procedures.
- We will continue to administer elections under Vermont law and are working with local clerks to ensure Vermont’s universal vote-by-mail General Election proceeds smoothly.
- Please familiarize yourself with your Vermont Voter Portal, which will enable you to track your ballot while it is in transit, and to see when your Clerk marks your ballot received.
- Our office remains committed to secure, accessible elections and to defending Vermonters’ right to vote. I encourage all Vermonters to start making a voting plan! There are numerous ways to ensure your voice is heard in the General Election, whether you mail your ballot back, hand-deliver it to your clerk or a ballot drop box, or vote in-person on November 3rd.
