LWV Files Lawsuit Over Mail Voting Executive Order

On March 31, President Trump issued a second Executive Order on elections, giving the U.S. Postal Service unprecedented oversight over who is voting by mail: https://www.votebeat.org/national/2026/03/31/donald-trump-2026-midterm-election-executive-or[…]f38

The order says that states must send the U.S. Postal Service a list of voters “to whom the State intends to provide a mail-in or absentee ballot” 60 days before any federal election and directs the Postal Service to create “unique ballot envelope identifiers, such as bar codes” for those voters. The Postal Service would only be authorized to deliver ballots from people on the list.

The League of Women Voters has filed a lawsuit and issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s executive order:

“The League of Women Voters has always and will always stand unapologetically on the side of voters, particularly those who have been historically disenfranchised within our system, such as women, voters of color, voters with disabilities, and older adults. The administration’s latest Executive Order is a direct attack not only on voters, but also on how elections are run in this country.

“The Constitution is clear: election administration is the responsibility of the states, not the executive branch. This order expands the president’s power while narrowing voting rights to a select few.”
