2023 ESSAY BY MICHAEL FERNANDEZ, THETFORD ACADEMY

Select an issue concerning voting rights or practices and briefly tell us your thoughts about it.

The issue I would like to address is voter suppression. Voter suppression in the United States is the use of legal and illegal tactics aimed at preventing certain citizens from exercising their right to vote. These tactics can include things such as voter ID laws, allegedly fraudulent voter roll purges, and the closing of polling places. Voter suppression has been a contentious issue during recent elections in the United States.

This issue made headline news during the 2020 Presidential election, where several states made significant changes to their voting laws just prior to the election, including the use of new voter ID laws, restricted mail-in voting, and increased efforts to challenge voter registration. While some state officials argued that these changes were designed to make voting more secure and reduce voter fraud, others argued that these policies were designed to suppress voter turnout and prevent certain groups of voters from casting their ballots.

One of the most notable examples of voter suppression in the 2020 election was the closing of polling places in predominantly Black and Latino communities. These closures made it much more difficult for the residents to vote and led to long lines at the remaining polling places. Other examples include voter ID laws or voter roll purges, which can disproportionately affect minorities who are less likely to possess ID or who have moved more recently.

Voter suppression has a profound impact on democracy, as it can limit the number of people who are able to participate fully in the political process. The right to vote is a fundamental right under the United States Constitution, and any attempt to limit or restrict that right is a major concern.

In terms of potential solutions, some experts have suggested that the federal government should take a more active role in enforcing voting rights and ensuring that people have equal access to the polls. This could include policies such as automatic voter registration, expanded early voting, and additional funding for polling places in underserved areas.

In our nation that prides itself on its democratic ideals, voter suppression is an important issue that deserves serious attention. As U.S. citizens, we should all care that all people have equal access to vote and to make their voices heard in our democracy.
