2021 Essay by Meghan Cole, Burr and Burton Academy

Voting is an important and very essential part of forming a democracy. For a very long time, voting rights were very restricted to certain people. Including, African americans, and women. As a woman, this is extremely important to me and hard to hear that this was a thing and allowed. The Women’s Suffrage Movement always stands out to me and encourages me to research more.

During the 1850s the Women’s Rights Movement was gathered and began. This was to encourage the United States Government to allow women to vote. This has a great impact and later on the nineteenth amendment was created which actually allowed women to have the right to vote. Although they had the right to vote they still were not able to do everything that men were allowed to do.

In today’s world, women are still not being treated equally. One thing that I always think of is workplace discrimination. Which is considered illegal but that does not always stop people or places. Although this is not much like voting rights of women, I believe that women should have had the right to do all of these things before an amendment was formed. Women spend a lot of time and still are putting in a lot of time and work and become equal and have the same rights as others do.

I personally believe that women can do just about anything a man can do. This is something that we as a country and world are still looking for. But I also believe that it was all meant to happen in order to get somewhere where everyone is treated equally.
