DESCRIPTION:Registration: bit.ly/LWV-PresidentialImmunity \nJoin us for “Presidential Immunity\,” the first in the League’s 2024-25 Lecture Series on Recent Supreme Court Decisions. \nOn July 1\, 2024\, in a historic and controversial decision\, the Supreme Court of the United States held that under the constitutional structure of separated powers\, a former President is entitled to absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for actions within his conclusive and preclusive constitutional authority and is also entitled to at least presumptive immunity from prosecution for all his official acts. \nRodney A. Smolla\, President of Vermont Law School will discuss the potential impact of the Supreme Court decision granting near total legal immunity for any official actions taken by the President of the United States.  \nProfessor Smolla is a nationally known scholar on matters relating to constitutional law\, civil rights\, freedom of speech\, and mass media\, particularly issues relating to libel and privacy. He has long been a strong advocate for experiential learning\, the development of professional competencies\, and civic engagement\, and has authored more than 100 articles published in law reviews and other publications. \nIn its ninth season\, the League of Women Voters of Vermont Lecture Series in collaboration with Kellogg-Hubbard Library\, is designed to bring outstanding speakers to discuss contemporary issues related to democracy and social justice. \nUpcoming presentations: December 11: City of Grants Pass\, OR v.
