This event explore the intersection of law\, firearms policy\, and constitutional authority\, offering diverse perspectives on one of the nation’s most pivotal recent rulings.  \nAre semi-automatic rifles equipped with bump stocks considered machineguns under the National Firearms Act of 1934?   \nOn June 14\, 2024\, in Garland v. Cargill\, the U.S. Supreme Court\, by a vote of 6-3\, ruled that the Bureau of Alcohol\, Tobacco\, Firearms\, and Explosives (ATF) exceeded its authority by classifying bump stocks as “machine guns.” \nBump stocks are firearm attachments that allow a shooter to fire their weapon by using the firearm’s natural recoil to quickly reengage the trigger\, resulting in an increased rate of fire. \nSpeakers: Billy Clark\, Senior Litigation Attorney\, Gifford Law Center (Burlington) and Cabot Teachout. Makin\, ruling that the state of Maine in disallowing vouchers to pay for religious-based private schools\, violated the First Amendment’s Free Exercise Clause and that states cannot disqualify private schools  from receiving public funding solely because they are religious. \nSpeakers: Rep. Rebecca Holcombe\, Vermont General Assembly and Harrison Stark\, ACLU Vermont. \nModerator: Susan Clark\, Middlesex Town Meeting moderator and member of the League. \n\n			\n				\n			\n				\n				Rep. Rebecca Holcombe\, Vermont General Assembly\n				\n			\n				\n			\n				\n				Harrison Stark\, ACLU Vermont\, Senior Staff Attorney\n				\n		\n\nRebecca worked as public school teacher\, principal and district leader\, before being appointed Secretary of Education by two governors. He serves on the board of the New England First Amendment Coalition. \nSusan is a writer and educator who focuses on community sustainability and citizen engagement. Raimondo overturning the federal judiciary’s 40-year-old practice of deferring to agencies’ reasonable interpretations of ambiguous federal laws. \nSpeakers: Bridget Asay\, Partner\, Stris & Maher\, LLP and Delcianna J. Winders\, Associate Professor and Animal Law and Policy Institute Director\, Vermont Law & Graduate Studies (VLGS). \nBridget\, an experienced trial and appellate lawyer who served as Vermont’s Solicitor General\, has argued dozens of appeals in state and federal courts throughout the country\, including twice before the U.S. Supreme Court. \nDelci\, whose primary interests are administrative and animal law\, clerked for the Hon. Free. \nRSVP: bit.ly/LWV-GrantsPass \nJoin us for “Homeless Camping on Public Property\,” the second in the League’s 2024-25 Lecture Series on Recent Supreme Court Decisions. \nOn June 28\, 2024\, the Supreme Court of the United States by a vote of 6-3\, upheld ordinances in the Oregon city of Grants Pass barring people who are homeless from sleeping within city limits\, using blankets\, pillows\, or cardboard boxes for protection from the elements. DESCRIPTION:Registration: bit.ly/LWV-PresidentialImmunity \nJoin us for “Presidential Immunity\,” the first in the League’s 2024-25 Lecture Series on Recent Supreme Court Decisions. \nOn July 1\, 2024\, in a historic and controversial decision\, the Supreme Court of the United States held that under the constitutional structure of separated powers\, a former President is entitled to absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for actions within his conclusive and preclusive constitutional authority and is also entitled to at least presumptive immunity from prosecution for all his official acts. \nRodney A. Smolla\, President of Vermont Law School will discuss the potential impact of the Supreme Court decision granting near total legal immunity for any official actions taken by the President of the United States.  \nProfessor Smolla is a nationally known scholar on matters relating to constitutional law\, civil rights\, freedom of speech\, and mass media\, particularly issues relating to libel and privacy.
