SUMMARY:Lecture Series: Bump Stocks are not Machine Guns? Garland v. Cargill
DESCRIPTION:March 12 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm EST | Virtual presentation. Zoom. Free. \nRSVP: www.tinyurl.com/lwvbumpstock or https://kellogghubbard.org/calendar/lwvgarlandvcargill \nJoin us for “Bump Stocks Are Not Machine Guns?” the final presentation in the League’s 2024-25 Lecture Series on Recent Supreme Court Decisions. This event explore the intersection of law\, firearms policy\, and constitutional authority\, offering diverse perspectives on one of the nation’s most pivotal recent rulings.  \nAre semi-automatic rifles equipped with bump stocks considered machineguns under the National Firearms Act of 1934?   \nOn June 14\, 2024\, in Garland v. Cargill\, the U.S. Supreme Court\, by a vote of 6-3\, ruled that the Bureau of Alcohol\, Tobacco\, Firearms\, and Explosives (ATF) exceeded its authority by classifying bump stocks as “machine guns.” \nBump stocks are firearm attachments that allow a shooter to fire their weapon by using the firearm’s natural recoil to quickly reengage the trigger\, resulting in an increased rate of fire. \nSpeakers: Billy Clark\, Senior Litigation Attorney\, Gifford Law Center (Burlington) and Cabot Teachout. Attorney\, DesMeules Olmstead & Ostler (Norwich). Moderator: Liz Scharf. \n\n \n \n \n \n Billy Clark\, Senior Litigation Attorney\, Giffords Law Center\n \n \n \n \n \n Cabot Teachout\, Attorney\, DesMeules Olmstead & Ostler\n \n \n \n \n \n Moderator Liz Scharf\, Chair\, Middlesex Select Board\n \n \n\nBilly Clark develops affirmative litigation strategies to effectuate gun safety reforms and defends against constitutional challenges to gun safety policies. In addition\, he consults with local governments and other organizations\, providing guidance on how to actualize gun safety policies.\n \nCabot Teachout previously worked as a law clerk for Judge William Sessions of the Federal District Court of Vermont and Judge Peter Hall of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He is a member of the National Association for Criminal Defense Attorneys and worked in the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative in Kosovo.  \nLiz Scharf is Chair of the Middlesex Select Board and Director of Community Economic Development and Food Security at Capstone Community Action in Barre. \nIn its ninth season\, the League of Women Voters of Vermont Lecture Series in collaboration with Kellogg-Hubbard Library\, is designed to bring outstanding speakers to discuss contemporary issues related to democracy and social justice.  \nQuestions can be sent\, in advance\, to league@lwvofvt.org.

RSVP https://bit.ly/LWVVTVoterSuppression \nThe League of Women Voters of Vermont\, in partnership with Kellogg-Hubbard Library\, presents the 2025-26 Hertz/Rader Lecture Series\, Voting Rights and Access to the Ballot.  \n \nLiz Tentarelli\, President of the League of Women Voters in New Hampshire (NH) since 2013\, will review common voter suppression methods\, as exemplified by recent NH legislation that tightens voter identification requirements\, including proof of citizenship for new voters. \nLast year\, LWVNH\, LWVUS\, and New Hampshire voters filed a federal lawsuit against Steve Kramer\, Lingo Telecom\, LLC\, and Life Corporation for voter intimidation\, coercion\, and deception ahead of the 2024 New Hampshire presidential primary. The lawsuit claimed defendants used illegal AI-generated robocalls to discourage voters from participating in the primary and sought a court order requiring the defendants to cease engaging in illegal\, dishonest\, and deceptive tactics nationwide. The League won the case. \nQuestions can be sent\, in advance to league@lwvofvt.org.  \nIn its tenth season\, the League of Women Voters of Vermont Lecture Series\, is designed to bring outstanding speakers to discuss contemporary issues related to democracy and social justice.  \nUpcoming presentations:  \n\nFebruary 11: Gerrymandering.\nMarch 11: John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the SAVE Act.

SUMMARY:Hertz/Rader Lecture Series: Voting Rights and Access to the Ballot
DESCRIPTION:March 11: John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the SAVE Act \nvirtual \nMarch 11 @ 7:00 – 8:30 pm EST | Virtual presentation. Zoom. Free. RSVP https://bit.ly/JLewisandSAVEAct \nThe League of Women Voters of Vermont\, in partnership with Kellogg-Hubbard Library\, presents the 2025-26 Hertz/Rader Lecture Series\, Voting Rights and Access to the Ballot.  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nSarah Copeland-Hanzas\, Vermont Secretary of State\, will discuss two bills now before Congress: John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (JLVRAA) and the SAVE (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility) Act.  \nThe John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would modernize and revitalize the Voting Rights Act of 1965\, strengthening legal protections against discriminatory voting policies and practices. It would restore the Voting Rights Act’s full power and put guardrails back in place to stop racial discrimination at the ballot box.  \nThe SAVE Act\, which has passed the House on February 11 by a vote of 218-213\, requires people who are registering for the first time and those who are re-registering after they move or change their name\, to provide proof of U.S. citizenship and will require voters to show photo identification. Additionally\, states would run their voter rolls through the Department of Homeland Security’s Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements database to scan for noncitizens. The bill is now in the Senate awaiting a vote.  \nQuestions can be sent\, in advance to league@lwvofvt.org.  \nIn its tenth season\, the League of Women Voters of Vermont Lecture Series\, is designed to bring outstanding speakers to discuss contemporary issues related to democracy and social justice.
