Free. \nRSVP: https://bit.ly/lwvcarson-makin \nJoin us for “Using Public Funds for Religious Schools” the fourth in the League’s 2024-25 Lecture Series on Recent Supreme Court Decisions. \nOn June 21\, 2022\, the Supreme Court of the United States by a vote of 6-3\, issued a landmark decision in Carson v. Makin\, ruling that the state of Maine in disallowing vouchers to pay for religious-based private schools\, violated the First Amendment’s Free Exercise Clause and that states cannot disqualify private schools  from receiving public funding solely because they are religious. \nSpeakers: Rep. Rebecca Holcombe\, Vermont General Assembly and Harrison Stark\, ACLU Vermont. \nModerator: Susan Clark\, Middlesex Town Meeting moderator and member of the League. \n\n			\n				\n			\n				\n				Rep. Rebecca Holcombe\, Vermont General Assembly\n				\n			\n				\n			\n				\n				Harrison Stark\, ACLU Vermont\, Senior Staff Attorney\n				\n		\n\nRebecca worked as public school teacher\, principal and district leader\, before being appointed Secretary of Education by two governors. She currently serves in the Vermont General Assembly as a state representative. Rebecca graduated from Brown University (BA)\, Simmons School of Management (MBA) and Harvard Graduate School of Education (M.Ed. and Ed.D).  \nHarrison litigates a range of civil rights and civil liberties matters in state and federal court\, including cases addressing free speech\, anti-discrimination\, border surveillance\, and government transparency. A graduate of Yale Law School\, he clerked for Hon. Randolph D. Moss at the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and Hon. David S. Tatel at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. He serves on the board of the New England First Amendment Coalition. \nSusan is a writer and educator who focuses on community sustainability and citizen engagement. An award-winning radio commentator and former talk-show co-host\, she is coauthor of several books including Slow Democracy. \nIn its ninth season\, the League of Women Voters of Vermont Lecture Series in collaboration with Kellogg-Hubbard Library\, is designed to bring outstanding speakers to discuss contemporary issues related to democracy and social justice.
